| [Movie Review] In SPEC Heaven |
|
In this world, how many people are born with special abilities? When I first received the invite to the preview of SPEC: Heaven, I suddenly remembered that I had watched the first episode of the drama two years ago but did not continue. As with my experience with any other Japanese movies that are adapted from drama franchises, I was sure that the movie would be an extension of the drama. I was right. With that in mind, I caught up on 10 episodes of Keizoku 2: SPEC and the Special episode. I was blown away.
SPEC: Heaven is a worthy continuation to the saga. Action-packed, witty, mind-boggling and laden with suspense, it kept me riveted and on the edge of my seat, anticipating what would unfold next. However, the movie seems to shut the door on non-viewers of the drama or the Special (which contains spoilers for those who haven't watched the drama). So, those unfamiliar with the drama might find themselves questioning: "Who is Ninomae? Who is Tsuda? What is Unit Zero? More importantly, what is SPEC?"
Drama and suspense aside, as usual, we see Toma and Sebumi caught in the tangle of petty squabbles. At times, the comedic antics between the detective duo provided a welcome respite from the intricately complex, yet tad confusing, plot.
In the movie, however, Sebumi seems a tad funnier than usual. Perhaps, this is an indication that he is becoming more comfortable around Toma and possibly hints at the beginning of a blossoming relationship beyond colleagues in the police force.
Like a Marvel production, new scenes are played mid-credits, so don’t be in a hurry to leave the theatre! In fact, those few scenes culminate in a vital ending scene (read: cliffhanger) which paves the way for a sequel of the drama or movie. Not that I’m complaining because a good show is definitely worth my time! Watch the trailer below!
